Motor Insurance in India, there are typically three main types of policies available for cars and bikes. These types determine what exactly the insurance company will pay for after an incident.
Types of Motor Insurance Policies
1. Third-Party Liability Policy (Mandatory)
This is the most basic level of coverage and is legally mandatory for every vehicle driven in India under the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988.
- What it Covers: This policy only covers the damages, losses, or injuries that your vehicle causes to a third party. The third party could be another person, their vehicle, or their property (like a boundary wall or shop).
- What it does not cover: This policy does not cover any damage to your own vehicle or any injuries you sustain.
- Key Feature: The coverage for third-party injury/death is unlimited, but the coverage for property damage is capped (currently at ₹7.5 lakh). Since the premium for this policy is fixed by the IRDAI, you cannot negotiate the price.
2. Standalone Own Damage (OD) Policy
This policy is designed to cover your vehicle only. It is typically purchased in addition to the mandatory Third-Party policy.
- What it Covers: This policy covers the damage or loss sustained by your own vehicle due to accidents, fire, theft, natural disasters (floods, earthquakes, storms), or man-made disasters (strikes, riots).
- What it doesn't include: This policy does not cover any liability to a third party.
- Key Feature: The premium for this policy is calculated based on the Insured Declared Value (IDV), which is the maximum amount the insurer will pay if your car is stolen or totally damaged. You can earn a No Claim Bonus (NCB) discount on this portion of the premium.
3. Comprehensive Policy (Package Policy)
This is the most popular and recommended type of policy as it offers complete protection. A Comprehensive policy is essentially a combination of the Third-Party Liability Policy and the Standalone Own Damage Policy.
- What it Covers:
- Third-Party Liability: Complete coverage for any damage or injury you inflict on others.
- Own Damage: Full coverage for damage or theft of your own vehicle.
- Personal Accident (PA) Cover: Mandatory personal accident cover (currently ₹15 lakh) for the registered owner-driver in case of accidental death or permanent disability.
- Key Feature: This package allows you to purchase extra protection, known as Add-ons or riders (like Zero Depreciation, Roadside Assistance, and Engine Protector), to customise and enhance your coverage. Since it covers the broadest range of risks, it offers the greatest peace of mind.
